Back in January I was fortunate enough to attend a fab event run by plus size fashion retailer Evans. A select group of bloggers got to try on a range of items from the forthcoming collections and we were spoilt with bubbly, hors d’oeuvres and fab company. Additionally, the Evans Shape Studio included the opportunity for us to get our hair and make-up done and pose in front of the camera in the gorgeous Evans clothing.
One of the dresses I got to try on the day was the Live Unlimited Black Slinky Maxi Dress.

It might not look much from the stock website photo but it’s a dress I really fell for on the day. Here are a few shots of me pretending to be a model in it…

This sample dress was a size 16 and although it fitted ok (and the baggy waist was simply solved with my black patent leather belt from eBay!) I would have preferred to try a 14 had one been available on the day.
Some time after the event the wonderful people at Live Unlimited got in touch to see if I’d like to review the dress on my blog. I jumped at the chance and naturally requested a size 14 (it comes in sizes 14-28).
The 14 was a much better fit overall. After requesting it I suddenly worried that it might be too small on the bust but actually it was fine thanks to the soft, stretchy fabric. It feels reasonably heavy without being hot, which is good for warmer days, and the material is of very good quality.
The length of the dress is good for flats or small wedges but a bit short for high heels. This might seem like an odd thing to mention when reviewing a maxi dress but not all are created of equal length! Some are shorter than others and for me this one is the ideal length.
I really like the short split sleeves as they add an element of slinky elegance to the dress. They also offer a bit of arm coverage without adding a full layer, which is really welcome at this time of year when the weather is warm.
A lovely feature is the keyhole cutout at the neck on the back of the dress. It fastens with a diamante button, which is very pretty but easily comes undone, as you can see from my photo above.
As mentioned, the boob room in this dress is great. My breasts are modestly covered and there is no need for a vest underneath – hurrah! There is a high chance of bra show under the arms as the armholes are quite big, but this is easily overcome by wearing a black bra to blend in, as opposed to a coloured bra as I am in the studio photos.
Even though the size 14 was a better fit overall, it still swamped my waist so I added my trusty Forever 21 belt to define my waist…
I really love the effect of adding a belt to this maxi dress. As it’s completely plain, a belt adds interest and the gold buckle of this simple black belt really stands out. A coloured belt would be another option if wearing this dress for a more casual occasion but black is spot on to keep with that elegant, stylish look.
This really is one of the best maxi dresses I have ever tried. It is comfortable, practical, feminine and classy. I love it!
