I was really pleased when shortly after reading Georgina’s blog post the fab people at Simply Be asked me to review a few items and of course this was top of my list! Georgina had tried it in a 16 and found it roomy so I went for the 14 as it was the smallest size available. I find there’s always a bit of a compromise with Anna Scholz for Simply Be dresses – they tend to be smallish on the bust and large on the waist/tummy – but they are soooooo gorgeously stylish that I find them irresistible!
…And the Plain Ruched Dress is no exception. Simply cut with ruching all over the body of the dress it is designed to flatter all shapes and sizes. It is cut generously so go for your usual size if you don’t want the dress to cling too much but size down by at least one size if you’re looking for a real show-stopping number that highlights your every curve.
The colour of this dress is simply divine. It’s described as magenta on the website and I think that’s pretty accurate. It’s a lovely shade of purply pink, identical to the fabric used in the bust section of the Cowl Colour Block Dress I tried a while ago (and wear all the time!).
I found the fit to be good overall and the extra fabric on the waist is sort of hidden by the clever ruching. I have never tried this sort of style dress before as I always assumed the ruching would add extra bulk but overall I like it and the silhouette it gives me.
The length is good – my knees are covered and the dress looks great with a pair of black patent killer heels.
The fabric is quite thin but is very soft and stretchy. It fits to my figure without being clingy and uncomfortable. However, I personally feel that a dress like this should really skim the figure so ideally I would have taken this in one or maybe even two sizes smaller, had the option been available.
So, what do I do when a dress gapes on the waist? You guessed it – I add a belt!
First of all, I started off with this elasticated animal print belt. The pattern features black and magenta animal print on a grey background and by complete coincidence the magenta perfectly matches the colour of the dress. It’s meant to be! I think it works really well with this plain coloured dress and adds a bit of fun to an otherwise very simple outfit.
Again, the addition of any kind of belt really transforms an outfit. This dress is so wonderfully plain that it would be possible to match it with a whole range of different belts. In these pictures you can see how well my plain black Forever 21 belt produces a more sophisticated look, and how the gold buckle adds a touch of interest and sparkle.
The dress has superb boob room and the coverage over the bust is great. There is no need to readjust the top section or check modesty, which makes a great change for me! This dress is very much work appropriate and can easily be dressed up with accessories for a girls’ night out.
The Anna Scholz for Simply Be Plain Ruched Dress is currently on sale so make sure you grab yours while they’re still in stock!
