A few weekends ago I had the pleasure of the company of my beautiful friend Hanna from The Wardrobe Challenge. We met at Westfield Stratford City in east London and proceeded to shop our socks off.
It was a fabulous day and we battled through the crowds to nab ourselves a fair few bargains. I managed to get something I had been wanting for quite some time – a denim jacket.
Regular readers of my blog won’t be surprised to learn that I have struggled in the past to find a denim jacket that works for me – with my big boobs and small waist it’s been almost impossible to find something that fits well and does not hide my curvaceous figure.
Whilst at Westfield, Hanna wanted to visit one of her favourite stores: Forever 21. I had only ever visited the store once before, again with Hanna, when we went shopping at Bluewater in Kent a while ago. The Bluewater store doesn’t have a plus size section, but the Westfield Stratford store does. We made a beeline for this section and I was very impressed with the range of items on offer.
I hadn’t set out to find a denim jacket on this particular shopping trip but when I saw rails with several styles on them I hurried to try them on. Hanna was a great advisor and helped me work out which jacket looked best. She even took photos of me so I could see how each jacket look different on me. Thank you, Hanna!
Here are a few snaps of the outfit I was wearing on the day:
Yes, it’s my beloved George at Asda Moda Floral Jersey Wrap Dress! Sadly it’s too small in the boob area to fully accommodate my girls so I preserved my modesty by adding a cropped vest top underneath and added a dark blue belt to cinch my waist. (I know the blue is not quite as dark as the navy in the dress but if you ever find a navy belt that would match please be sure to send me details of it!) You can’t see from these photos but I also have on my trusty black Maidenform Shaping Leggings and my super comfortable Skechers Tone-Ups boots.
This outfit is great for shopping as it is stylish and feminine but easy to get off and on in the changing rooms.
After trying on a variety of denim jackets, I ended up buying this one for £22.75:
It’s the Forever 21+ Casual Denim Washed Jacket (item code 15036929045) in size XL. It seems to be no longer available on the website but I found a similar one here.
I found this denim jacket a little too generous in the body so I tried the straight sized version in size L but it was too small, so ideally I’d want something between the two, which sadly doesn’t exist. I therefore bought the larger size as if needs be I could always get it altered, but for now I am pretty happy with the overall fit.
I love this jacket! Its length is perfect as it just skims my hips – Hanna’s photos on the day showed me how this was much more flattering than the slightly longer jackets instore which hid my shape completely.
Although the fitted arms are snug, they are actually great because they don’t add unnecessary bulk to the jacket. However there is not enough room in the arms for me to wear a jumper or anything thick underneath.
The colour is lovely – a deep denim blue – and the fabric isn’t distressed so its appearance is relatively smart but casual.
My hair is covering the back of the jacket but the back seams are shaped so there is a curve-friendly cut to it – yet another thing the wonderful Hanna pointed out to me when we were in the store! No more baggy-backed denim jackets for me, thank goodness.
The biggest bonus is that I can actually fully fasten the jacket over my boobs, so if I was cold it could offer me warmth and protection. This is quite some feat as often denim jackets with a fit as good as this don’t have enough boob room at the front. Just like the back, the seams at the front are also shaped to give a great fit.
In an ideal world I would have preferred this jacket in a darker denim and with side pockets but for a snip at around £20 I really shouldn’t complain. It’s a great colour and I am looking forward to milder, drier weather so I can get lots of wear out of it!
There are lots of jackets available on the Forever 21+ website at the moment – here are a couple of favourites of mine…

I love this Pleated Geo Button Jacket (£24.75). It comes in black – a classic – and red, pictured here. I love the vibrancy of the colour and how the jacket is shaped to show the model’s waist. The puff sleeves are an added bonus which bring a bit of fun and a modern twist to this stylish blazer.

Funky and sassy, this Contrast Trim Quilted Jacket (£27.75) is a real eye-catcher. The black is perfectly offset by the white edging and the statement rounded collarless neckline gives this jacket a very individual look.
Forever 21+ is available in sizes XL to 3X so it’s perfect for plus sized bodies. If, like me, you aren’t too familiar with them, make sure you check out their website and have a good look around. They do lots of gorgeous items in ‘straight’ sizes too!
