The Perfect Cami

I have always had a problem with finding dresses and tops with sufficient boob room for my big breasts. So many items would look lovely if only they had more coverage over my chest. It’s not a good look to have one’s bra showing but in order to make sure this did not happen I have previously had to opt for high necklines, which I am not a great fan of, or sizing up to fit my boobs, meaning that the fit elsewhere was oversized and baggy.

Fairly early on in my boob-clothing journey I found that I could wear a thin vest underneath tops and dresses to cover my modesty. However, this meant wearing an extra layer and in warmer months or in centrally heated environments this could be pretty uncomfortable. It also changes the appearance of clothing as the neckline looks very different but at least it meant I didn’t have to settle for poorly fitting clothing any more.

As time went on, I grew tired of always feeling hot due to the extra layer a vest provided, so I fashioned my own version of a cropped top (which I will write a ‘how to’ post about another time) and managed as best I could. This was not a perfect solution as the fit was not great but in the main it did the job and meant I suddenly had far more wardrobe options open to me.

Naturally, I am always on the lookout for alternative solutions to this problem. A while ago I was given the opportunity to review some pieces from The Perfect Cami – I had seen this fabulous video review by A Sophisticated Pair, her written blog review, and another from Boosaurus –  and jumped at the chance. I must at this point apologise to the lovely people at The Perfect Cami as this review is very long overdue, but I hope it will prove worth the wait.

The Perfect Cami is an American company based in Long Beach, California, and the company was established in 2009. The camis have been perfected over the years and now have the following features:

So, it’s a simple cami that doesn’t add bulk to your bra straps, nor adds that extra layer of thickness under your clothing. Sounds perfect! Let me show you how I got on with them.

I was sent a selection of camis (Perfect Cami ship internationally, read more here), some suitable for everyday use and others for special occasions when a bit of glam is called for. All are in size XL, which is the size that was recommended to me by The Perfect Cami’s very own Ann. By the way, if you’re unsure about which size to buy your Perfect Cami in you can read their recommendations and sizing advice hereUnfortunately the first batch Ann sent went missing and I never received them (over a year later I am still left wondering where on earth they ended up!), but Ann kindly sent another package that found its way safely to my letterbox. So, let’s get on with the item reviews.

First up, we have the Lace Trim Mini Camisole in black (currently on sale at $19.50 (US), sizes S-XXL):

As you can see, the cami has no straps. Instead, it has hook and loop fasteners that wrap around your bra straps to hold the top of the cami in place. For reference I am wearing my Ewa Michalak PL Cappuccino Bra 30L/65L in these photos.

Ingenious! A further feature that has been added since I was sent these camis last year is that you can also specify your ‘bra size’, which will affect the amount of room the hook and loop – somewhat similar to Velcro – fasteners allow for. The sizes to choose from are narrow (for very thin bra straps), standard (bra straps 1/2″-1″ wide) and extra wide (over 1″). Had this option been available when I was choosing my camis I would have definitely gone for the extra wide option and I think this would have solved the issue I had with the hook and loop fasteners coming undone and the ‘prickles’ irritating my skin. I only found this when wearing the cami for a very long day at work where I moved around a lot, but I am glad to see this option available now.

So, what does The Perfect Cami look like on me? Does it work, and does it cover my 32KK/L boobs?

The Perfect Cami is brilliant. Yes, it looks very different on me to what it looks like on the model but it serves the purpose fantastically well. There is a little bra show at the sides of the cami but I don’t think this matters at all as I will be wearing a top or a dress over the cami.

This black cami is 90% polyester and 10% spandex, so it is light and stretchy and gives a great fit. It is not at all tight and it does not dig in anywhere. It is incredibly comfortable to wear. For me, the genius part is where the cami covers my back – it does so very minimally and with super thin fabric so as to not add extra bulk under clothing or make the wearer feel any hotter. Under clothing, the outline of the cami is not at all visible and even seems to be a part of the item of clothing. I tried my camis with the blue eBay jersey pencil dress I reviewed recently:

I included some pictures of me bending forward so you can see how much the cami covers my boobs: completely! There is not even a hint of cleavage with this one, meaning that it’s ideal for any occasions when the merest hint of boob flesh would be inappropriate. The lace along the top edge is a nice touch to make the cami a little more special instead of it being plain black fabric.

Next up, we have the Black Silver Scallop Lace Mini Camisole (currently on sale at $19.50 (US), sizes S-XXL):

Once again, this cami (85% polyester, 15% nylon) looks very different on me:

The black and silver lace fabric is very pretty and offers a sexy hint at what lies underneath due to its slight translucence. The silver flowers help disguise my cleavage line and the fabric covers all but the very top of my breast tissue. This cami is better suited to nights out or special occasions, and is ideal for party dresses that are cut just that little bit too low.

For a bit of glamour, the next cami I tried was the Glitz Grey Lace Mini Camisole (currently on sale at $24.00 (US), sizes S-XXL).

The grey cami (85% polyester, 15% nylon) works really well with the blue of this dress and looks fantastic with the graphite grey version, too. Again, this is more of a party cami than an every day one but I guess it really depends what you wear it with as to how much the sparkling sequins are emphasised. I love it!

The final cami to show you is the Leopard Print Mini Camisole (currently on sale at $21.00 (US), sizes S-XXL):

I do love a bit of leopard print! This cami (85% polyester, 15% nylon) is completely opaque so there’s not even a touch of peek-a-boo going on here. The fabric is embellished with clear sequin-like spots, which personally I would have preferred it didn’t have, but they give the cami a fun, sparkly touch. This one is also available in a black/grey colourway for those who prefer monochrome.

My only wish with these camis is that I would love them even more if it were possible to adjust the amount of cleavage on show. Sometimes I like to show a bit more and other times less; these camis are perfect for the latter but sadly I can’t pull them down to show a bit more boob as the neckline is restricted by the fasteners around my bra straps. As I have big boobs I will always have bras with quite a lot of coverage so I can’t see a way around this, but I would love it if there was a solution!

Having not looked at the website for some months, I was amazed to see the wealth of choice now available at The Perfect Cami. I love the camis that were so kindly sent to me, but I also adore these:

Crinkle Mini Camisole in Gold. It’s great to have a plain option that’s not black, and gold/neutral tones work well with the majority of colours, so it would be a practical choice, too.

Basic Solid Mini Camisole Full Figure. The Full Figure range offers camis for up to a 56″ overbust measurement so most plus size ladies should have options here. A plain black cami is a must for every woman’s wardrobe, surely? Even better, it comes in five more colours: white, navy blue, brown, purple and ivory.

And now for something completely different: the Ruffle White Polka Dots On Pink Mini Camisole. Because POLKA DOTS!!!

And it looks gorgeous underneath a simple black cardi:

There are many, many more – each one is different and perfect for different occasions. The variety of colours, patterns and fabrics is marvellous!

The camis are all hand wash only, but they’re so light and compact that it’s really easy to wash them whilst in the shower with a bit of baby shampoo, in the same way that I hand wash my bras.

Even better news – these camis are ideal for breastfeeding or for use as a post-mastectomy camisole. As stated on the website: “A portion of all sales will be donated as part of Team Perfect Cami’s efforts for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.” Read a review of The Perfect Cami by breastfeeding mum, June from Braless in Brasil, here, and another by Hourglassy, who was looking for ‘Big Bust Cleavage Control’ (love it!!).

All in all I am delighted with my Perfect Camis and I recommend them to anyone looking for a practical and pretty way to solving tops and dresses that show too much boob.

Gosh there are some really lovely camis here and on the website. I would also like it if the amount of cleavage on show could be adjusted as I fear these might come up a big high on me, I am only 4'11!!!

I don't think they will come up too high on you, but if you are uncertain you should email them for advice.

I love the idea! Don't have to deal with tank top lines under your dresses or them riding up, don't have to go into full slip mode (I live in very hot AZ, US, so that's a big thing)!

Yes – they are the perfect solution!

OMG!!! THEY ARE BRILLIANT!!! I have to get me some!!! This is something I've been wanting for 20 years, having worn ill-fitting tops and all sorts of makeshift coverings under very open necklines… Thanks again for a very useful review!!!

Oh wow these are fantastic! How did you find out about them in the first place?? I have googled for this sort of thing before but no useful results came up so your post is SO helpful. I really like that they do plus size options too. My sister in law will be so happy to hear this! Thanks for posting xx

How much was the shipping to the UK? Also, I assume all bras over a 32J would need the "extra wide" option?

As I was sent these items for review I did not have to pay for postage, but all the details will be on the website (link within post).

If only it solved the problem of the sides of the bra showing – I can't bear that look and have not yet found an answer. Any ideas anyone? so many dresses pull at the side and then show off to much bra. Maybe I should invent something?!

    • Curvy Wordy
      19 June 2014 / 18:30

I think the only way to stop a bra showing at the sides is to not buy items that do that. I have quite a range of clothing in my wardrobe where this is not a problem, but I have also tried on in stores a lot of items that do show my bra, and I simply don't purchase them. The problem is that the armholes are cut too big, coupled with the fact that large boobs will make the bust area stretch and pull from the armholes. Sometimes it's possible to put a few stitches to close the armholes a little but that can then cause issues with the bust fit. Why is nothing ever easy?!

Oooh these look great! I didn't know anything like this was available on the market so thanks for the information. I'd love to see a tutorial of how to turn a regular vest into a cami, that would be so useful to all your readers I am sure xxx

Wow! I never realised such a thing existed! These could be a godsend for me as sometimes I just need a bit of a "modesty panel" without sweating under an extra layer!
