Amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life, finding ways to challenge ourselves both mentally and physically can be a rewarding pursuit. The 75 Hard Challenge is one such endeavour that promises to push your limits and foster resilience. Created by Andy Frisella, this challenge is not just about physical fitness but is primarily a mental toughness challenge. But what does it entail and how does it purport to transform your life?
What is the 75 Hard Challenge?
The 75 Hard Challenge is a 75-day program that involves a strict regimen aimed at building mental fortitude. Here’s what you’ll need to do every day:
- Two 45-minute workouts: One must be outdoors, regardless of the weather. This aspect of the challenge is designed to build resilience and adaptability, forcing you to confront and overcome external conditions.
- Follow a diet: No cheat meals or alcohol. The diet is self-selected, allowing you to tailor it to your nutritional needs, but the key is strict adherence without deviation.
- Drink a gallon of water: Hydration is crucial for both physical performance and cognitive function, making this a foundational element of the challenge.
- Read 10 pages of a non-fiction book: This encourages continuous learning and self-improvement, broadening your horizons and deepening your understanding of various subjects.
- Take a progress photo every day: While this might seem superficial, it serves as a daily reminder of your commitment and progress, helping to keep you accountable.
If you miss any of these tasks, you must start over from day one. It’s a test of consistency and commitment, intentionally designed to push you out of your comfort zone.
The Mental Benefits of 75 Hard
While the physical aspects of the 75 Hard Challenge are demanding, the mental benefits are profound. Participants often report increased discipline, improved focus, and a greater sense of accomplishment. By adhering to a strict routine, you learn to prioritise tasks and manage your time more effectively.
Building Resilience
The challenge teaches participants to embrace discomfort and persist through adversity. Whether it’s working out in the rain or resisting the temptation of a cheat meal, each day strengthens your resolve. This resilience can translate to other areas of life, enabling you to handle stress and setbacks with greater ease.
Enhancing Self-Discipline
Sticking to a routine for 75 days requires unwavering self-discipline. This newfound discipline can spill over into other areas of your life, helping you achieve goals you might have once thought were unattainable. The structure provided by the challenge can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle with procrastination or lack of motivation.
Improving Mental Clarity
The combination of physical activity, hydration and reading can lead to improved mental clarity. Regular exercise is known to boost endorphins and improve mood, while reading stimulates cognitive function and enhances concentration. Together, these elements can lead to a sharper, more focused mind.

Is the 75 Hard Challenge Right for You?
The 75 Hard Challenge is not for everyone. It requires a significant commitment and can be physically and mentally taxing. However, if you’re looking to break free from complacency and push your limits, it could be worth considering.
Consider Your Goals
Before embarking on the challenge, it is worthwhile taking some time to reflect on your personal goals. Are you seeking a mental reset, or are you looking to improve your physical fitness? Understanding your motivations will help you stay committed. It’s important to align the challenge with your personal values and objectives to ensure it is a meaningful experience for you.
Prepare for the Journey
Preparation is key to success in the 75 Hard Challenge. Plan your meals, schedule your workouts and ensure you have access to the books you want to read. Having a support system in place, whether it’s friends or family, can also provide encouragement when the going gets tough. Consider setting up a journal to document your journey and to enable you to note your challenges and triumphs along the way.
Tips for Success
- Start Small: If the full challenge seems daunting, consider starting with a shorter version to build confidence. This can help you ease into the routine without feeling overwhelmed.
- Stay Accountable: Share your progress with others or join a community of like-minded individuals. Online forums and social media groups can offer support and motivation, helping you to stay on track.
- Focus on the Journey: Remember that the challenge is about personal growth, not perfection. Celebrate small victories along the way, and don’t be too hard on yourself if you stumble. The key is to learn from each experience and keep moving forward.
- Adapt to Your Needs: While the rules are strict, it’s important to listen to your body and make adjustments as necessary. If you’re feeling overly fatigued, for example, make sure to modify your workouts to prevent injury.
- Maintain Balance: While the challenge is intense, maintaining a balance with other aspects of your life is crucial. Ensure that your commitments to work, family and social activities are not neglected.
Overcoming Common Challenges
Many participants face common hurdles during the 75 Hard Challenge, such as time management and maintaining motivation. Here are some strategies to overcome these obstacles:
- Time Management: Integrate your workouts into your daily routine by scheduling them at the same time each day. This consistency helps establish a habit and reduces the likelihood of skipping sessions.
- Motivation: Keep your end goals in mind and remind yourself why you started the challenge. Visualising your success can be a powerful motivator.
The 75 Hard Challenge is a powerful tool for personal development, offering a unique opportunity to test your limits and grow stronger, both mentally and physically. While it demands dedication and perseverance, the rewards are well worth the effort. If you’re ready to transform your mindset and embrace a new level of discipline, the 75 Hard Challenge might just be the journey you need.
By embarking on this challenge, you’re not just committing to a temporary change but potentially setting the stage for lifelong habits that enhance your wellbeing. Whether you’re seeking a mental reset or a physical transformation, the lessons learned during these 75 days can have a lasting impact on your life.
Have you tried or are you considering trying the 75 Hard Challenge? Let me know in the comments!
Interesting article, I’ve never heard of this before but it sounds like a decent challenge. I would like to give it a go myself but I’m in the middle of 6 week plan at the moment. Will definitely think about giving it a go when I’ve finsihed that though.
I have heard of this but don’t think I have it in me to complete the full 75 days. It seems so tough! Maybe they should break it down into smaller chunks to make it more possible?
I tried this challenge but only managed 7 days. Huge respect to anyone that can last the full 75 days, that’s a real achievement for sure.
Honestly I couldn’t think of anything worse, haha! I prefer to eat (fairly) healthily and exercise at my own pace without the pressure of targets and competitiveness. But I know some people like that sort of thing so would probably relish this challenge.
I did this challenge in April this year. It wasn’t too bad for me but I am used to doing these sorts of challenges. I imagine it would come as quite a shock to someone who isn’t accustomed to regular hard workouts so do your research before giving it a go and make sure you do it at the right level for you. This article is very useful with lots of clear guidance so take heed!
So glad you posted about this! I am 3 days away from completing my 75 days, I can’t believe I have almost made it through. Nothing will stop me now – hopefully!! It was really, really hard at around the 2 week mark but I kept going and now it feels so normal to push myself so hard almost constantly. My advice would be to focus on one day at a time rather than thinking how many days you have ahead of you. But yeah, definitely recommend it to anyone who is already used to regular exercise and generally in good shape.
Big respect to anyone who gives this challenge a try and even more to those who manage to complete it. It defeated me after 13 days (unlucky I guess!) and there’s no way I will try it again. Like someone else said it’s important to know your limits and capabilities, for me this was just too much.
