Online marketplace Vinted has boomed in recent years, quickly becoming one of the most popular sites for individuals to buy and sell both new and second hand clothing, shoes and accessories – and much more! However, it may seem a bit of a minefield to the uninitiated, so I’ve put together this guide to navigating Vinted to help.
Whether you’re looking to declutter your wardrobe, resell an item you’ve never worn, or find unique fashion pieces at bargain prices, Vinted offers a user-friendly platform to enable individuals to do all of this with ease and minimal hassle.
This guide to navigating Vinted will walk you through setting up your account, listing items, and navigating the buying and selling processes with confidence.
Setting Up Your Vinted Account
Download the App or Visit the Website
- Access Vinted: Either download the Vinted app from the Apple Store or Google Play or visit their website. You can view items for sale or look up members’ usernames on the website without having an account if you just want to have a look around.
- Sign Up: Create an account using your email, Facebook, Google, or Apple ID. Choose a unique username – you may wish to select one that reflects your style or personality, or you may opt to go for something more generic for anonymity. Don’t overthink it as it really doesn’t matter too much, as long as it’s not offensive!
Complete Your Profile
- Profile Picture: Upload a profile picture to enhance trust and authenticity. Avoid using the default grey icon as this can be off-putting, especially to longstanding Vintees. It’s not necessary to use a picture of yourself if you don’t want to – some successful Vinted users I have liaised with have had pictures of their pet, scenery, their car, or even their wardrobe. It’s up to you!
- Bio: Write a brief description about yourself in the “About Me” section. This helps potential buyers and sellers get to know you better. If you like, you can use this section to explain any points that buyers need to be aware of; for example, if you are only able to despatch items on certain days.
Verify Your Account
- Verification: You may wish to verify your account. It’s important to note in this guide to navigating Vinted that this step is not compulsory, but Vinted says that it adds credibility and can make buyers feel more secure when purchasing from you. Whilst this may well be true, I and many other users have bought and sold successfully on Vinted without having verified our accounts. It’s an entirely personal choice as to whether you decide to do so or not.
Listing Items for Sale
Create a Listing
- Photograph Your Item: Use high-quality, well-lit photos to showcase your item from multiple angles. Make sure the whole of it can be seen in your main photo. Include close-ups of notable details (such as fastenings, pockets and the condition of the fabric) and indeed of any flaws to maintain transparency. For clothing, it’s best to showcase your item on a hanger or mannequin if you have one, rather than on the floor or on a bed. Think about what looks most appealing to you when you’re looking to buy something, and go with that.
- Craft a Compelling Title and Description:
- Title: Keep it concise and informative. Include the brand, item type, color, and size (e.g., “Zara Floral Maxi Dress – Size S – Blue”).
- Description: Be honest about the item’s condition – if you don’t describe the item accurately and honestly you leave yourself open to the buyer making a SNAD (significantly not as described) claim against you. Buyers often won’t mind if an item isn’t completely perfect but if the seller hasn’t been transparent or truthful about its condition in the listing it is unsettling and leaves a bad impression.
Provide measurements if you can (particularly if the item is an unusual/non-standard size) and highlight any special features – e.g. if it has pockets, if the fabric is stretchy, etc – and/or flaws such as minor damage or bobbling/pilling. If you wish you can use relevant keywords to improve searchability.
Set a Competitive Price
- Research Prices: Check similar items on Vinted (although from experience the suggested prices Vinted shows are usually the cheapest possible, probably to encourage more sales!) and other platforms like eBay or Depop to set a reasonable price. Buyers are of course looking for bargains, but it’s also important to point out in this guide to navigating Vinted that it is entirely up to you what price you set. It costs time and trouble to list on Vinted so you may wish to take this into account in your price. It’s perfectly acceptable to charge a higher price for a good quality item.
Fill Out Relevant Fields
- Complete as many Listing Fields as possible: Ensure you fill out all relevant fields, including category, brand, size, condition, colour, and material composition. This takes a bit of time but it helps buyers filter their searches effectively and will ultimately mean more sales for you.
Tips for Searching and Evaluating Items
Searching for Items
- Use the Search Bar: Enter specific keywords, brand names, or filters to find items that meet your criteria.
- Explore “Similar Items”: Check this feature on listings you like to discover alternatives that may suit your needs better.
Evaluating Sellers
- Check Seller Reviews: Before making a purchase, read the seller’s reviews to gauge their reliability and the quality of their items.
- Communicate with Sellers: Don’t hesitate to ask questions about the item’s condition, sizing, or any other aspects before purchasing. Clear communication can help ensure a satisfactory transaction.
- Be Wary of New Sellers: Everyone has to start somewhere so if you discover an item that is being sold by a first-time seller it’s not necessarily a red flag but it is certainly worth taking a moment’s pause. Consider if the item is too good to be true – if it is, it’s probably a scam and you may wish to report it to Vinted.
Communicating with Buyers/Sellers
For Sellers
- Respond Promptly: Engage with potential buyers by responding to messages quickly. This shows you are active and interested in making a sale.
- Be Open to Negotiation: Consider sending offers to buyers who have favourited your items. This can encourage them to make a purchase.
- Adjust Your Bundle Discounts: Make sure you do this as soon as possible after setting up your account as they’re set by default to 50%! You can set up a discount for all buyers who create bundles in your wardrobe. The bigger the discount, the more likely it is that people will be interested in buying more than one item from you.
For Buyers
- Ask Questions: If you have any doubts about an item, reach out to the seller for clarification. This can prevent misunderstandings and ensure you’re making an informed decision. It also helps ensure that if you do go on to buy, the item you receive is in the condition you expect.
Safety and Security Features on Vinted
Buyer Protection
- Refund Guarantee: Vinted provides a buyer protection policy that guarantees a refund if the item received significantly differs from the description or is damaged. You have 48 hours after delivery to report any issues so make sure you familiarise yourself with the procedure should you need to use it in the future.
Secure Payment System
- Payment Process: When a buyer makes a purchase, the payment is held securely by Vinted until the buyer confirms they are satisfied with the item. This ensures that sellers receive their funds only after a successful transaction.
Reporting Suspicious Activity
- Report Issues: If you encounter any suspicious activity or listings, report them to Vinted. This helps maintain a safe community for all users.

- Facebook: There used to be a forum within Vinted where users were able to help one another with queries. Unfortunately, in early 2024 Vinted decided to shut it down – probably because it wasn’t cost-effective to run. There are several helpful groups on Facebook that endeavour to fill the gap that was left and provide a friendly and informal guide to navigating Vinted – the best one in my opinion can be found here. Please note that the group is not affiliated to Vinted in any way and is run by users, not Vinted employees.
