As the leaves turn golden and the air grows crisp, it’s time to embrace the cosy comfort of autumn. This season is perfect for bringing the Danish concept of ‘hygge’ into our homes, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that soothes the soul. In this post, we’ll explore a variety of autumn hygge ideas to help you transform your living space into a snug haven.
I cannot believe it’s already October! At this time of year as the weather starts to turn a little chillier I find myself yearning for all things cosy and comforting. Don’t get me wrong, I love hot weather when I’m on holiday and can swim in the sea to cool off, but the heat in the UK is so oppressive even when the temperatures aren’t particularly high, so as summer starts to turn into autumn I always feel a sense of relief and excitement for impending the cooler weather and not having to be permanently situated in the airflow path of a fan just to survive.
In relation to cosiness I have been looking into the world of hygge (pronounced hoo-gah, in case you were wondering). If you haven’t heard of it before, hygge is the Danish concept of creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. It’s basically the art of creating joy and cosiness in everyday moments, and what better time to embrace it than autumn?
So I have put together a list of some autumn hygge ideas to transform your home into a haven of cosiness!

- Embrace the Power of Soft Lighting
There’s something magical about the warm glow of candlelight, isn’t there? One of the easiest autumn hygge ideas to implement is to scatter candles throughout your living space. Many people will opt for scented ones with ‘autumnal’ fragrances like cinnamon, pumpkin spice, or apple to really set the mood for themselves; however I am not a fan of any of those scents so do bear in mind the preferences of those who will be visiting your home as hygge is intended to be welcoming! Additionally, if you’re worried about open flames (especially with little ones or pets around), battery-operated LED candles can create a similar ambiance without the risk.
- Layer Up with Cosy Textiles
Nothing says autumn hygge quite like snuggling up under a pile of blankets. Invest in some super-soft throws and cushions in rich, autumnal hues like deep reds, burnt oranges and forest greens. Don’t be afraid to mix textures – think chunky knits, faux fur, and velvet. The more tactile, the better! If you’re someone who can quickly overheat like me try a thick cotton blanket, which should add warmth whilst also being breathable.
- Create a Reading Nook
One of my favourite autumn hygge ideas is to carve out a dedicated space for reading. It could be a window seat, a comfy armchair in a quiet corner or even a pile of floor cushions. Add a soft lamp, a side table for your tea or hot chocoloate and a basket filled with your favourite books, and you’ve got the perfect spot in which to lose yourself in a good story on those chilly autumn evenings.
- Bring the Outdoors In
Autumn is such a beautiful season so why not bring some of that natural beauty indoors? Collect pinecones, acorns and colourful leaves on your next walk and arrange them in a bowl as a simple centrepiece. Or you could try your hand at making a wreath using autumn foliage – it’s easier than you might think and makes for a lovely afternoon activity either by yourself or with family, particularly children.
- Indulge in Comfort Food
Is there anything more hygge than the smell of something delicious baking in the oven? Autumn is the perfect time to dust off those recipe books and try your hand at some hearty, warming dishes. Think homemade soups, freshly baked bread and apple crumble. Not only will your house smell amazing, but you’ll have a tasty treat to enjoy afterwards – win-win! Again, this is an activity that the children in your family will undoubtedly enjoy taking part in with you, making it one of my favourite autumn hygge ideas.
- Set the Mood with Music
Create a cosy autumn playlist filled with mellow tunes that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Whether you prefer classical melodies, acoustic covers, or indie folk, having some gentle background music can really enhance the hygge atmosphere in your home.
- Declutter and Simplify
While hygge isn’t about perfection, it is about creating a sense of calm and contentment. Take some time to declutter your space, focusing on the areas where you spend the most time. A tidy, organised space is one of the autumn hygge ideas that can help you feel more relaxed and present, both of which are key components of the hygge lifestyle.
- Embrace Slow Living
In our 24/7 non-stop world, one of the most valuable autumn hygge ideas is simply to slow down. Set aside time for activities that bring you joy and help you unwind. This could be anything from having a long soak in the bath to doing some gentle yoga or even just sitting quietly with a cup of tea and watching the world go by outside your window.
- Host a Cosy Gathering
Hygge isn’t just about solitary comfort – it’s also about sharing warm moments with loved ones. Invite a few close friends over for a low-key movie night, complete with plenty of blankets, popcorn and hot chocolate. Or hosting a pot luck dinner where everyone brings their favourite autumn dish to share is one of the most simple and inclusive autumn hygge ideas.
- Create a Cosy Craft Corner
One of the loveliest autumn hygge ideas is to set up a little craft corner in your home. Whether you’re into knitting, painting or scrapbooking, having a dedicated space for creativity can be incredibly soothing. Stock up on autumnal-coloured yarns, paints or papers, and let your imagination run wild. There’s something wonderfully hygge about creating something beautiful with your own hands, especially as the nights draw in.
- Embrace Autumn Scents
Our sense of smell is closely linked to our emotions, so why not use it to create a cosy atmosphere as one of your autumn hygge ideas to try? You may wish to invest in some autumn-scented essential oils like cinnamon, clove or orange and use them in a diffuser (I’m sure you’re well aware by now that those scents are the stuff of nightmares for me! Instead I might opt for pine or lavender).
Or you can simmer a pot of water on the stove with cinnamon sticks (eeeeek), apple peels, and orange slices for a natural, homemade air freshener that’ll make your whole house smell like autumn. If like me you’re not a fan of cinnamon you could leave it out and try the latter two fruity suggestions instead.
- Create a Cosy Bedtime Ritual
These autumn hygge ideas aren’t just for your living room – you can extend the cosiness to your bedroom too! Create a soothing bedtime ritual to help you unwind. This could involve changing to soft, fleecy pyjamas and sipping on a cup of chamomile tea whilst reading a few pages of a good book before lights out. Don’t forget to swap your summer bedding for something warmer and snugglier – this is one of my most favourite aspects of the cooler weather!
- Embrace the Early Darkness
As the days get shorter, instead of lamenting the loss of daylight one of the most straightforward autumn hygge ideas is to try to embrace the early evenings. Use them as an excuse to light more candles and curl up under a blanket earlier to enjoy some quiet time. There’s something magical about looking out at a dark, crisp autumn evening from the comfort of your warm, cosy home.

Implementing these autumn hygge ideas doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. It’s all about creating moments of comfort and contentment in your everyday life. The beauty of hygge is that it’s personal to you, so what feels cosy and comforting to you might be different from someone else, and that’s perfectly okay!
So as the autumn chill sets in I encourage you to experiment with these autumn hygge ideas and find your own perfect recipe for cosiness and contentment. Create a space that makes you feel warm, safe and settled. After all, isn’t that what home is all about?
