Bravissimo Lola Luxe Basque in Black/Teal 32K and Briefs XL

I am always on the look-out for lingerie other than bras and knickers. In the J+ cup size range there are sadly very few options available so when something comes up I am always incredibly keen to give it a try.

A few months ago a friend of mine sold me her nearly new Bravissimo Lola Luxe Basque in Black/Teal (sells new for £50.00 in sizes 28 DD-J and 30-38 DD-K) with brand new matching briefs and thong. I had checked the item on the Bravissimo website and had fallen head over heels in love with its design and colours:

The basque my friend was selling was 32K, and the briefs and knickers were XL. Having read the numerous reviews on the Bravissimo website I wasn’t terribly sure if the basque would work for me but I was so eager to own something as sexy as this that I threw caution to the wind and bought it anyway.

The Lola Luxe Basque set is just beautiful. If you’re a regular reader of my blog you’ll know what a huge fan of teal I am so to be able to nab this gorgeous set with its teal and ink blue highlights was a real treat!

The basque has unpadded cups that are single lined on the lower section but made with a very thick, almost opaque, fabric, and double lined on the upper section. The upper section is beautifully decorated with teal and inky blue embroidery, and there is a teal bow at each of the points where the straps meet the cups and also one on the central gore. The embroidery on the cups is also featured along the front of the basque and looks really lovely against the black background.

The front body of the basque is made of the same material as used for the lower section of the bra cups; it’s an almost opaque black fabric that is not stretchy and feels very slightly hard to the touch, although not uncomfortable to wear.

The back body of the basque is made from a stretchier fabric, similar to that you’d find on a regular bra’s band. It is slightly more see-through than the material used on the front and feels a little softer, too. The back fastens with three rows of 12 (yes, 12!) hooks and eyes. Being a single lady, I found it quite a feat doing them all up on my own, especially as I had to fasten them on the tightest hooks, and it was tricky to make sure they were all fastened on the same row. The first time I tried the basque on I put it on backwards, fastened it and spun it around before putting my breasts into the cups. Second time around, when I was putting the basque on for these photos, I was determined to put it on without spinning it as I was worried I’d cause irreparable damage so I persevered and got there in the end. I guess it’s just one of those things that takes practice!

Overall, the cups and band of the 32K basque fit me fairly well. I do find the cups to be a bit on the large side and as you can see they are pretty much full coverage so sizing down (if it had been an option) would have been ideal. The wires were rather wide for me and also quite long as they dug in a bit under my arms. Not really badly, but enough for me to notice. All that said, the cups give my boobs good uplift and a really great shape.

Reviews of this basque on the Bravissimo website suggest that it comes up big in the back and I concur with this. I am wearing the basque on the tightest hooks in these photos so next time around if buying brand new I would go for a 30K (down one size in band and cup).

The basque’s straps have a frilly ribbon sewn down the front half and I’m pleased to report they are fully adjustable. They are really soft and super comfortable to wear. They don’t dig in and the adjusters do not move once they have been set in position. My only gripe with them is the clip the attaches the straps to the back of the basque. The clip is not round and therefore sometimes twists and turns round of its own accord (as you can see from my photos). When this happens the edges of the clips dig in and feel horribly uncomfortable. I do hope this is something that was rectified with the newer versions of the Lola Luxe basque.

Lengthwise the basque is good on my body with its short torso and high waist. It is cut slightly higher at the back, which is good news for me and my ample bottom, and the fact the front is longer helps to cover most of the tummy area. The basque has two light bones down the front and two down the back to help with shaping. As the boning is plastic it bends to fit your body but I suspect they may bend out of shape if worn when sitting for an extended period. This is an important aspect to consider if thinking of wearing this at work for an office job, for instance.

I did not find that the basque gave me any kind of shaping or slimming effect, but I did not purchase it for this purpose. As I have such a difference between my waist and hips it is so rare to find mainstream shapewear/lingerie that works for me in both areas and in this instance the basque is a smidgeon too tight on the hips in order to get a reasonable fit in the body. For me, the boning helps give the garment some structure, rather than it providing me with any additional shaping benefits. The basque does help to smoothe, though, so if you are looking for lingerie for this purpose then the Lola Luxe is a great option. And, as there is no bra band as such, the common gripe many women have of getting back fat underneath the band is not an issue. Hurrah!

I absolutely adore the fact the basque has built-in suspenders (or garters, for my readers across the pond). There are four fairly narrow suspender straps which can adjust fairly long but being only 5’5 I had them as short as they could possibly be. Having six suspenders would have made this basque perfect as I do prefer the security of having that extra set to help keep my stockings in place. As you can see from my photos, they have fallen down a little during my photo session, but that’s mainly because I used cut up tights instead of proper stockings as I didn’t have any to hand at the time. I hope to be able to show you some plus size stocking options another time.

The matching briefs and thong are every bit as pretty as the basque. They both feature the same embroidery and bows and are super comfortable to wear. I am wearing the XL briefs in these photos. As you can see, they are a little snug on me so if I’d bought them from new I would have gone for the 2XL. The XL thong I have is more forgiving so I am comfortable with it in this size.

I absolutely adore the Lola Luxe Basque set and highly recommend it to anyone looking for something more than just a bra and briefs. Sadly the Black/Teal colourway is now almost sold out but there are three others still available:

Lola Luxe Basque in Ivory (Basque £50; sizes 30-38 F-K. Brief £16, sizes S-2XL. Thong £14, sizes S-2XL). Ideal for one’s wedding day or for wearing under lighter coloured outfits.

Lola Luxe Basque in Black (Basque £50; sizes 30-38 F-K. Brief £16, sizes S-2XL. Thong £14, sizes S-2XL). I love the simple yet dramatic look of this set. I suspect it could work as outerwear if wished as it is so unfussy.

Lola Luxe Basque in Blackberry (Basque £50; sizes 30-38 F-K. Brief £16, sizes S-2XL. Thong £14, sizes S-2XL). This colourway is so lovely and I am sure it looks even better in real life! Such a great option as an alternative to the more common lingerie colours of black and white.

You look amazing in this! How will you wear this in normal life–under special occasion dresses? to work?

Thanks Darlene <3 I think as the fit is a bit off I will keep it as a 'special occasion' piece. If I ever manage to get one in a better size I would consider wearing it at any time but as I mentioned in the review I would be wary of the bones bending too much if I wore it when sitting for a while.

Thanks for your comment and kind words. I never show my face in lingerie photos as I like to focus on the item in question, rather than my facial expressions 😉 Also I prefer to retain my relative anonymity as I'm sorry to say that on occasion my photos end up on less tasteful websites…
