Yours Clothing Lycra™ Xceptionelle Hosiery 40 Denier 3D Tights

I am always on the lookout for new hosiery and shapewear to try.  Day to day, I usually wear my beloved Sweet Nothings Get The Skinny Shaping Leggings, but, depending on the season, event and outfit, leggings are not always appropriate so I try to keep a good selection of other items which can do the job of smoothing and shaping instead.

Tights are something I have been keeping an eye out for recently.  Here in the UK, the weather has taken a turn for the worse and it’s been much colder of late.  This means that I need to wear tights when wearing a skirt or dress so I was really pleased when Yours Clothing got in touch to offer me a pair of tights to review.

Now, these are not just any tights.  These are the new Lycra™ Xceptionelle Hosiery 40 denier 3D tights in black.

Yours Clothing are the first plus sized retailer to bring Lycra™ Xceptionelle technology to the British High Street, an achievement of which they are understandably very proud.

The Xceptionelle 40 denier 3D tights are designed to bring outstanding comfort and fit performance to taller, fuller-figured women. This new technology brings:

  • Improved fit: enhanced stretch prevents dig-ins at inner thighs and waist.  Single layer fabric construction in the waistband reduces rolling.
  • Increased comfort: Soft yarns and sheer lightweight panty area eliminates compression and friction, preventing chafing.
  • Quality: high quality yarns reduce the likelihood of laddering.
  • Appearance: Maximum width eliminating panels and seams.

The idea is that this new Lycra™ Xceptionelle technology will provide tights and hosiery that is comfortable, does not need constant adjustment, has superb fit and is available in a wide range of sizes.

This new hosiery will soon be available in range of prints and deniers and Yours Clothing are welcoming feedback from their customers.  I was sent a pair of 40 denier 3D tights to try for myself.

I was really impressed with these tights!  When taking them out of the packaging I found them very soft to the touch, but they felt different to other tights I’ve tried before and I guess that must be the Lycra™ Xceptionelle content.

The tights were incredibly easy to put on – as a woman who is used to manoeuvring herself into shaping leggings every day, these tights were an absolute breeze!  They felt like they would be really durable and not ladder easily, which is of course a huge benefit for any pair of tights.

The waistband was lovely and loose and I was able to easily pull it up to tuck into the band of my bra, as you can see in the photos.  As I am only 5’4 I had lots of room available but taller ladies might not have been able to do this.  However, I don’t think there is any need for wearers to feel their tights have to be pulled up this far as the waistband felt sturdy enough to stay put all day long, without being held in place by a bra band.

The tights did not dig in at all anywhere on my body.  The thigh area remained smooth (well, as smooth as my thighs are ever going to be!) and I liked the fact the tights became more sheer in the section where the legs meet the body.  This means that only minimal thickness of tights covers this area, which results in a more comfortable experience and hopefully less generation of heat.

Being made from 83% nylon, 16% elastane and 1% cotton gives these tights a durable yet flexible makeup, and they should flex to comfortably fit any size within the specified range.

I did find these tights were a little on the large side for me.  I requested a size 16-20 as I usually wear a size large or extra large in tights (it’s always a quandary to know whether to  get things to fit my hips/legs or my waist) and there was lots of room in the waist but also the legs were a little on the loose side too.

I love the fact that these tights do not have compressing properties at all, meaning that I did not feel held in by them.  But personally I like a bit of smoothing from my hosiery and I feel that in a smaller size I might have achieved this.  However, as a plus size retailer, Yours Clothing offer these tights in three sizes: 16-20, 22-26 and 28-32, so if I want a smaller size I will need to look elsewhere.  Alternatively, I could wear some sort of shapewear underneath these tights if wished.

You can read another review of these tights over at the wonderful Fuller Figure Fuller Bust blog here.

And Yours Clothing currently have a fantastic competition running where you can win £250 to spend with them – check it out here (ends 14th Dec 2012).

It’s absolutely wonderful that a high street brand is focusing on the hosiery market as there is clearly a need for the offer of tights for plus sized bodies to be improved.  I can’t wait to see what other designs and deniers these are released in – what would you like to see available?  Do you have patterns or colours in mind that are currently not on the market?

I ordered some from yours clothing and found as you did that they were a little too big (I tend to wear closer to a 10-14 but thought I might be able to get away with it. In any event I was looking for something a little thicker so I sent them back. And your right about the weather it is auite chilly out lately. Do you have any suggestions for knee high boots for ladies with larger calves? Your thighs and calves remind me of my own so I thought you may have come across some worth buying. Thanks ~M

Hi there, thanks for your comment. These are definitely a generous fit but I bore in mind that the ones I tried are a size 16-20 so would perhaps not feel so loose on someone at the higher end of the scale.Regarding knee high boots, I have personally given up that search as they just don't suit me. I think ankle or calf length boots are better on me, but I guess that's just a personal preference. If you want knee high boots then I would thoroughly recommend Simply Be as they have a pretty extensive selection 🙂

The tights look great on you as well! It can be challenging to find tights that aren't on on the small size range. I also like how you say there isn't a lot of compression because I hate how so many tights are . . . well . . tight! In the future, I'd love to see colors (teal, purple, etc.) and patterns (chevron, polka dot, etc.) since those are lacking, especially in the plus-size hosiery!

How did you find that it worked with dresses? Did they cling? I find that cotton and viscose cling a lot to anything but bear legs, and I really hate that :/

I wore them with one of my Dolores dresses at the weekend and no cling 🙂 (Dolores dresses are 98% cotton 2% elastane) x
