Curvy Kate Star In A Bra 2012 - Final Vote!

Well, I really don't know where the time has gone but suddenly we've only got two days left to vote for the winner of Curvy Kate's Star In A Bra 2012 as the competition closes on Tuesday 1st May 2012.

The girls have been whittled down from 30 to 10 through a public vote and now we need to vote for one last time to decide who will be the overall winner.

It's really hard to choose a favourite from the fantastic 10 finalists but I have already cast my vote so I urge you to hurry up and make your decision before time runs out.  You only get one vote so choose wisely!

The winner will be representing the brand in their forthcoming campaigns so if you want to find out more about the girls before voting you can click their pictures on the Facebook page.  You can also read individual interviews with all the finalists on Curvy Kate's blog.

I wish each and every finalist the very best of luck and look forward to hearing the announcement of the winner on Thursday 3rd May 2012.

The bra that changed my life

The wonderful Kitty Lingerista at Undercover Lingerista is celebrating her 1 year bloggiversary by running an amazing competition on her blog.  She is asking people to write about the bra that changed their life; this is my entry.

Like many women, I spent most of my life wearing the wrong size bra.  Until very recently I hadn't had a proper fitting and, although I never used the ridiculous '+4' method to calculate my size, I know I have been wearing far too big a band for the majority of my boobified years.

I have been large-breasted since my teens and used to order bras from my mum's 'Great Universal' mail order catalogue.  Unfortunately I was limited to boring white bras as that's all that was available in my size but nonetheless I would pore over the lingerie pages wishing I could make those pretty coloured sets work for me.

Later in my teenage years I found La Senza and enjoyed having a wider choice of colours available to me, but as I got older and my boobs continued to expand I became unable to buy bras in my size on the high street.  Fortunately by this point the internet had taken off and I was able to purchase bras online from places like Figleaves, Brastop and eBay, but my choices were limited and I lusted after bras in pretty prints, colours and patterns.  Most of all I longed for a bra that was not full cup or balconette (which came up as pretty much full cup on me) and even dared to dream of having a plunge bra.

Finally, I discovered the bra that changed my life.  The Ewa Michalak PL Garden.

PL Garden

In fairness, the PL Garden was one of several bras I ordered from Ewa Michalak in my very first haul almost a year ago, but it was the Garden that stood out from all the beautiful gems inside the treasure chest that was the brown cardboard box containing my purchases.

(N.B. The PL Garden is not in this picture as I was wearing it!!)

For so many years, I had longed for a bra like this.  A PLUNGE BRA!  Its bright white background contrasts so beautifully with the red floral pattern and lace edging.  And the matching undies are gorgeous too!

I actually cried when I tried this bra on and saw my reflection in the mirror.  Finally my boobs looked how I had wanted them to for so many years!  They were uplifted, supported and had such a wonderfully rounded shape that they almost looked indecent - well, certainly compared to the shape I'd got from my previous bras.

I love how the direct translation from the Polish version of Ewa Michalak's website (using Google Translate) describes how their plunge bras 'bring together the breasts producing two round apples' - such a perfect description!

I could not stop myself from repeatedly squeezing my boobs - I was not used to them being so rounded and well supported.  Thankfully I was in the privacy of my home and I just about managed to restrain myself from doing so in public!!

The colours of the fabrics used in this lingerie set are so flattering to my skintone.  I had been back from holiday for over a month when these pics were taken so not much tan left but somehow the bra and undies make me look lovely and brown again.

Since getting this set, I have worn it on many occasions.  It has never failed to give me great cleavage, fantastic support and amazing uplift.  I always feel that same excitement when I put this bra on - there is something truly magical about it.

Additionally, I have stopped getting the back and neck ache I used to suffer from previously - I had never associated it with my bra before but clearly the PL Garden has affected my life in more ways than one.  Having big boobs does not necessarily mean you are bound to suffer with aches and pains!

Sadly, many of my Ewas are now too big in the band as I have lost a bit of weight and my shape has changed somewhat.  However this is good news as it means more new bras are needed to refill my lingerie drawer...

If it hadn't been for Ewa Michalak bras, and in particular the PL Garden, I may well have still been wearing bras that were the wrong size for me.  I would recommend Ewa Michalak bras to anyone as they will give you superb results and could even reduce/stop any back and neck pain you may be experiencing.

So there it is, the bra that changed my life.  I hope you enjoyed reading about it.

Did a certain bra change your life?  Why not write to Kitty and tell her all about it - you could be in with a chance of winning some superb prizes in the process.  You can enter her fantastic bloggiversary competition here - but be quick as the closing date is Monday 30th April 2012.  Good luck!

Bravissimo Boudoir Beau Bra

Bravissimo have a wide range of own brand bras available on their website.  Almost a year ago I visited their store in Ealing and tried on several styles and sizes but could not find anything that really suited me.  I have now realised that this is probably because I was going for too big a band - my Ewa Michalaks have helped me become accustomed to a firmer band and now I find I am sizing down time and again.

I recently placed an order with Bravissimo for several bras and one of them was the very foxy Boudoir Beau in red/graphite.

This is an unpadded bra available in a range of colourways in sizes 28DD-J and 30-38 D-K.  As this bra was in the sale I was limited by the sizes available and so went for a 32K:

Wow!  This bra is so pretty!  I love the bright red fabric and grey lace overlays, it works so well.  My pictures make the red rather more orangey than it is in real life.  As with all Bravissimo bras I have tried, the fabrics used are soft and seem as though they would last a long time.  Their bras seem well-made, give good uplift and shape and are built for comfort as well as style.

The straps are lovely and thick and are fully adjustable, although you would need to force the clip over the grey lace which runs down the front of the straps if needing to tighten more than halfway.

There is a big floppy bow on the centre gore which is made out of the grey lace (I can't decide if I like it or not) and cute red and grey bows with a grey rosebud adorn the section where the straps meet the cups.

The band is fairly stretchy but firm and there are three rows of three hooks and eyes.

It turns out the 32K fits me pretty well.  The band is good - although I would have liked to have also tried the 30 if I could but it wasn't available at the time of ordering - and the K cup isn't bad at all.  It gives me a great shape, as you can see from the pics above, and there is no cutting in to my upper breast tissue.  If anything, the cups were a little roomy and I would have liked to have tried a 32JJ and a 30K for size but sadly they are no longer available in this colourway.

This bra is much more full-coverage than I am used to so I am not sure if I would have much use for it due to the fact that I rarely have my decolletage area covered up.  I could keep it as a bra to wear around the house but it's far too pretty (and a bit expensive) to be confined to such lowly wear.

I will certainly be keeping an eye out for a cut-priced Boudoir Beau either on eBay or in the Bravissimo sale - do let me know if you spot one!

I have reviewed other Bravissimo own brand bras, including the Parisian PlumeRococo Charm, Dotty Spot and Moulin Rose.

My quest for a sleep bra: Royce Sadie

I have reviewed the Royce Sadie in one of my earlier posts but wanted to try it again in a smaller band and bigger cups.  I found this bra available on Bravissimo, which is a great place to find large cup bras.

The Sadie is also available as a nursing bra on Bravissimo.

So, to recap, the things I am looking for from a sleep bra are comfort, separation, support and shape.  So far I have come close with the Triumph Doreen but their sizing does not go small enough in the band and large enough in the cup for me.

The Sadie I tried was a 34K:

The cups on the Sadie are made from a faintly spotted poly cotton fabric, which contains X-Static.  This component is designed to give the best performance and comfort for the fabric by eliminating odour and static, regulating temperature and having an antibacterial effect.  The tops of the cups are edged in a pretty white and black lace, which I am guessing must be made with cotton as it is so soft and not at all scratchy.

The fit was so much better than the 36H I tried previously.  The cups were, of course, more generous and therefore gave me better shape.  The band was tighter and provided more support and because of this I found the straps more comfortable.  Interestingly, I had found the Royce bras I tried on last time very difficult to put on; this one was a breeze!

However, this was still not the perfect bra for me.  The tops of the cups cut into my breast tissue, creating a slight quadraboob, and I felt there was not enough separation between the cups.  This meant that my breasts were touching in the middle and I am sure that would lead to a sweaty cleavage at night - not nice!  I felt like I wanted to adjust my boobs all the time.

The straps are not fully adjustable and in fact don't even adjust by half.  This was a problem for me as I wanted to make them shorter but there was no way to do that.  The band is very stretchy, but feels like it would not stretch with wear, and fastens with four rows of three hooks.

I feel that Royce bras are excellent quality but again I am finding a problem with cups being too shallow for me.  Had the cups been deeper, I would not have had such a problem with breast separation and therefore think I would have been more likely to keep this bra.

My quest for a sleep bra: Royce Charlotte

The Royce Charlotte is another soft cup bra which I reviewed back in the early days of my blog.  I tried it in a 36H but found it to be completely unsuitable for me.

The Charlotte is available on Bravissimo in sizes 28DD-J and 30-40DD-K (also available in a nursing bra).  It's a great selection of sizes and the promotional picture suggests good support and shape.

I ordered a Charlotte from Bravissimo in a 34K as I felt the smaller band and larger cup might just work for me.

At first view, this bra might look like it suits me well.  The cups are clearly large enough in volume and the band fits me well.

The cups are made from a soft poly cotton mix fabric and have a pretty polka dot mesh section along the top.  The straps are wide and comfortable and there are four rows of three hooks.

However, the straps only adjust part way (not even halfway), meaning that I cannot give my breasts as much support as I would like.  These pics show the straps fully adjusted.

The tops of the cups cut into my breast tissue, giving me slight quadraboob.  I'm not overly fussed about this for a bra that I would wear at night and around the house but surely it can't be good to wear a bra that does this?  I know some of the Ewa Michalaks I own are a little small in the cup but they certainly don't cut in as significantly as this bra does.

My biggest gripe is that the cups are too shallow for me.  This 34K is the largest cup available and yet my breasts still met in the middle - I hate it when that happens!  I guess to some extent this is inevitable for unwired bras as there is no central gore to hold the breasts apart but even so I was disappointed at how much spillage into the middle there was with the Charlotte.

I think this is a very pretty bra and Royce have tried hard to make it pretty and appealing to a younger market but for me it doesn't quite hit the spot.

Freya Charleston Bikini

We're fast approaching that time of year where thoughts turn to swimwear and what to wear on the beach this summer.  I sometimes go sunbathing by the sea on the Kent coast and in my back garden but most of my soaking up the sun is done when on holiday abroad so it's important I find a good bikini or two to take with me as it's impossible to easily buy a replacement in my size when abroad.

Needless to say that I struggle each year to find a suitable bikini on the internet but always get something in the end that does the job ok.  This year however I have a new search as my body and opinion on how a bra/bikini should fit have changed somewhat and I now need a smaller back size and larger cups.

I have blogged before about my previous bikini successes and failures so I won't go into it all again in this post.  Instead I would like to tell you about a bikini set I tried recently.

Last year, one of my great successes was the Freya Pier red halter neck bikini.  This year it's available in black which is incredibly practical but, as in previous seasons, it only goes up to a GG cup which is no good for me in a smaller band size.  I tried on my red 36GG Pier bikini top from last year and it was way too big for me in the band, although I must say the cups were a reasonable fit.  If I was handier with a needle and thread I might have tried altering it to fit but I don't trust myself to make a good job of it!

I was therefore really thrilled when the team at Eveden offered me the chance to try their new halter neck bikini for 2012 - the Freya Charleston Red Banded Halter Neck Bikini Top and Rio Brief

I love the design of this bikini with its red background and pretty off-white bow pattern. There are frills along the cups and on the briefs - these comprise a top layer of patterned material and a layer of plain red beneath, which makes a great contrast.

The bikini top is available up to an H cup in some back sizes so it gives us more boobily-blessed girls the chance to have a halter option, which is always appreciated.  From the pictures online, it looked to be a slightly more revealing cut than the Pier so I was very excited when my parcel arrived in the post a few days ago.

I went for the top in a 32H (biggest cup available in a 32 back) and the briefs in an XL.

On my first try-on of this set I must admit I was a little disappointed.  The cups definitely provide less coverage than the Pier so they seemed way too small for me (my usual issue with bras/bikini tops!) and I thought that there was no way of making the top work.  I took it off and put it aside for a couple of days.

For some reason, I felt compelled to try it on again the other day.  After some jiggling, tucking and adjusting I found that in fact the cups were a better fit than I'd first thought and although they are definitely a bit too small for me, the bikini works pretty well overall.

The 32 band is really good for me.  I did wonder if a 30H would have been even better but that would have meant the equivalent of a 32GG cup-wise so it would have been completely disastrous!

The halter ties have thick elastic inside them so they are very comfortable on the neck.  Obviously for girls with bigger breasts like me there will always be a bit of strain to hold up our boulders in a halter neck but you can of course adjust the straps as required.  I am thinking of sewing mine together to make a permanent length over-the-head style strap as the knot of the tie hits my neck just at the wrong place but this could be alleviated somewhat if I tied a bow instead of a knot.

The Rio briefs are really cute but for my ample bottom they are definitely too brief!  As I have said before, the XL is really not big enough for me in any case and I would be so thrilled if Freya made their briefs (bikinis and knickers) in an XXL and even an XXXL so that I could have some matching sets.  As it is, I think I will wear the plain red bikini briefs I wore last year when wearing the Pier top and see how I get on.

I really love this set and am looking forward to taking it on holiday with me.  If this style/design is not for you then do make sure you check out Freya's website anyway as they have such a wide range available that there's bound to be something to make you smile.  I am particularly impressed with the plunge bikinis which are made up to a JJ cup - I must try one of these out asap!

A fabulous Friday fitting with Leia Lingerie

Good Friday 2012 turned out to be a great one for me as I spent the majority of it in the company of the wonderful Georgina of Fuller Figure Fuller Bust.  We had decided to have a day of lingerie shopping - what could be better?

We headed off to Bluewater shopping centre in Kent as we wanted to visit a Leia Lingerie store and this was our closest branch.

Being particularly eager beavers we arrived at the store not long after it opened so had the place pretty much to ourselves to begin with.  The staff gave us a great welcome and encouraged us to look around on our own but said we should feel free ask if there was anything they could do.  Perfect!  It's crucial for shop assistants to strike the right balance between being helpful and available but not overbearing, as this could intimidate customers.  On the other hand, what really gets my heckles up is when staff don't even acknowledge the presence of customers - I have been in some stores where the employees seem to find it an inconvenience that they have customers to deal with!  I'm delighted to report that the ladies in Leia got this balance spot on and, although they quietly chatted lightheartedly amongst themselves whilst they went about their duties, I could see that they were maintaining an excellent awareness of what was going on in the store and were ready and attentive if we needed their help.  This meant that Georgina and I felt relaxed and free to browse the gorgeous lingerie and swimwear ranges at our own pace.

After a little while looking round, we had a selection of bikinis and bras to try on and were shown by the lovely Annie to the changing rooms.  We shared a cubicle and ended up spending a long time chatting as we tried on our items.

Unfortunately we both found that nothing we had chosen was any good, apart from a Royce soft cup bra for me in a 32L (review to follow!).  We spoke to Annie and she suggested a proper fitting so we took her up on her kind offer.

I have only once had a proper fitting before, and that was at Bravissimo in Ealing about a year ago.  The young lady there was nice but perhaps not quite as knowledgeable as I was expecting so I was interested to see how my fitting at Leia would compare.

Annie started off by bringing us some bras to try in our 'usual' sizes.  I didn't have much of an idea to start with as I have been wearing Ewa Michalak bras for almost a year and the Polish sizing system is not the same as that used in the UK.  However, I did know that the Bravissimo Boudoir Beau had been a smidge too large in a 32K so I wondered if I might be a 32JJ.

The first bra I tried was the Freya Lacey.

It's so pretty and looks like it would work as a nude bra due to its neutral colouring so I was pleased that this was one Annie picked out for me.  Unfortunately we found the 32JJ was too big in the band so we went for a 30JJ and finally settled on a 30K.  Read my review of the Freya Lacey here.

I also gave the Freya Lauren a whirl in black.

Again I needed the 30K and was pleased with how comfortable this bra felt in the cups.  My review is here.

After becoming so accustomed to how well my Ewa Michalaks fit I had wondered if I would ever be satisfied with another brand but these two Freyas did a good job.

Georgina got some lovely items too which she wrote about here.  We were both surprised but naturally delighted when Annie told us that the store manager, Leigh, had said that the items we had chosen would be gifted to us.  So kind - thank you so much!

I know some people are dubious of reviews where bloggers have been given 'free stuff' but this is the first time it has happened to me and I wish to clarify at this point that I will always give my free and unbiased opinion regardless.

I have visited the Leia store at Bluewater in the past and have always received the same excellent service that I witnessed on Friday.  Staff at Leia are consistently helpful, knowledgeable and discreet and what impresses me most is the way they put their customers at ease.  When I have visited in the past I have chosen not to have a fitting for various reasons (usually short of time!) and although the ladies would always knock on the door of the changing room to check I was ok they would never force the issue of checking the fitting (although it is always advisable to let them do so) and I think this is really important.  Regular readers of my blog will know how much I adore my lingerie but I would honestly run a mile from a store where I felt the staff were over-familiar or didn't know when to leave me in peace to try the items on my own.

Annie was just perfect with us on Friday.  She brought in different sizes if we required them and then left us to try them on, giving us plenty of time to adjust ourselves and make sure we had formed an opinion of the fit.  She would then knock and let us decide if she should come in or not - of course the answer was always 'Come in!!' :-)

Annie was happy to spend as much time with us as we required to discuss the fit and then talk through further options.  If we needed yet more sizes or a different style, she cheerfully went to get them.  Considering the amount of to-ing and fro-ing she did with getting me into the right size in the Freya Lacey, I could have forgiven her if she was getting fed up.  But not a bit of it - she maintained her professional, cheerful attitude throughout and was genuinely delighted when we finally got the right fit for me.

Leia's team are really superb in making their customers feel valued and the fact they don't rush their bra fittings shows that they must have a first class staff training programme.  Perhaps they should offer this programme to some of the big name stores such as Marks and Spencer...but more on that in another post.

In Leia, I felt like I was in a really high end store (à la Pretty Woman when she goes to shop on Rodeo Drive (the second time around)) and the assistants were on hand to cater to all our lingerie needs.  The wonderful thing is that Leia do not charge over the odds for their items and even have regular sales and special offers so you can always grab a bargain from them.  They have an in-store loyalty scheme where you earn a stamp for every £30 you spend and when you get 9 stamps you get a free bra of your choice.  ANY bra!  I have it on good advice that savvy ladies opt for the Fauve range for their freebie as they usually retail at around £50 each ;-)

I have never felt pressure to buy when shopping in Leia.  In fact, one time a couple of years ago when I was umming and ahhing between the Freya Jolie and the Pollyanna, the assistant even offered to write down the details of the bras for me so I knew which sizes and styles I had tried on.  I ended up going back to the store on another day and purchasing the Pollyanna - even though I could have bought it online for a pound or two less, I knew that the service in Leia was worth paying a tiny bit extra for.

All in all I cannot recommend Leia Lingerie highly enough.  They have the perfect balance of beautiful lingerie, a wide range of styles and sizes and superb staff.  Thank you to Leigh, Annie and Lucy (as well as Sarah and G who were on the later shift) at the Bluewater store for making us feel so welcome and spending so much time ensuring we left with some lingerie that fitted us to perfection :-)

Bravissimo Moulin Rose Bra

Whilst looking through the many bras available on Bravissimo recently, the Moulin Rose caught my eye instantly.

It's a padded halfcup bra (although some of the reviews say it's more like a balconette or full cup) and is available in sizes 28-38 DD-HH.  I tried it in a 34HH:

What a heavenly-looking bra!  The foam cups are a delicate powder pink on the inside and are printed with a gorgeous lace design on the outside.  The tops of the cups are edged with deep pink velvet on top of soft black lace.  The central gore and section where the straps meet the cups are adorned with pretty bows in the same velvet material, and the velvet continues along the front of the straps.

The band has reasonable stretch to it and fastens with three rows of three hooks and eyes. The straps are nice and thick for comfort and are fully adjustable but half of the straps are covered in the pink velvet so it would be necessary to force the clip over it if wishing to tighten beyond halfway.

Sadly, the cups were too small and shallow for me and as you can see from the pictures I got really bad quadraboob.  Also, the band was too big for me so ideally I would have needed to go down at least one band size and up two or three cups.  Unfortunately this is not possible as the largest cup available in this style is HH.

I definitely found this bra more supportive than the Parisian Plume and Rococo Charm I tried but it just is no good for me overall.  So far the Dotty Spot has been the best Bravissimo own brand bra for me, but the Boudoir Beau comes a close second.

This bra is stunning and feels like a really luxurious item of lingerie.  I highly recommend giving it a try as it could suit your breasts better than mine.  And if it fits you, I will be extremely envious!

Curvy Kate's Star In A Bra Top 30 - Time To Vote For Your Favourites!

You may have read my earlier post about entering Curvy Kate's Star In A Bra 2012 competition.  Well, the top 30 was announced a little while ago and now is the time to choose your favourite three and vote for them!  Voting closes at midnight on Tuesday 3rd April so you have less than 24 hours to make your mind up.

The ten ladies with the most votes will go through to the final stage which is where we all get to vote for who we want to WIN the whole thing but this intermediate part of the competition is really crucial to decide who gets through.

I was so pleased to see that the judges have done a fantastic job and selected a wide variety of girls for the top 30, from younger ladies to those in their 40s.  True to Curvy Kate's ethos, they have not simply chosen girls who are stick thin or have stereotypical model looks, but have instead gone for women who look amazing and unique and who are comfortable in their own skin.  It's so important that the lucky few chosen to model CK's lingerie are confident, sassy and eye-catching in order to show the pieces off to best effect.

The simply stunning Lizzie Haines won last year - I wonder who will be her successor.  Vote NOW!

Bravissimo Rococo Charm Bra

I recently tried the Rococo Charm bra, which is one of Bravissimo's own brand bras.  I had heard great things about this bra - and read many rave reviews on the Bravissimo website - so was excited to try it for myself.

This unpadded bra is available in sizes 28-38 DD-HH so I decided to give the 34HH a whirl.

It's utterly beautiful!  But sadly for me not one that suits my breasts...more about that shortly.

The bra has lovely thick straps which are super comfortable and adjust fully.  The band is reasonably stretchy and fastens with three rows of three hooks and eyes.

The cups are made from a delicately coloured pistachio fabric which is overlaid with black lace.  There are pretty bows adorning the central gore and the section where the straps meet the cups.

Unfortunately, the shape of this half cup bra was completely wrong for my breasts.  The cups were not deep enough and therefore I had frightful quadraboob.  I also found that my breasts did not quite fill out the bottom of the cups - although if I had persevered I might have been able to adjust myself to fit into them better.

It's clear from the photos that the wires on this bra are far too wide for me so even if it came in a large enough cup I don't think this would have been a goer.

The band was far too big for me and in fact I think I would have needed a 30 rather than a 34 and therefore the cups would have been even smaller on me as a 30HH (largest cup available) is the equivalent to a 34GG!

I absolutely adore the way this bra looks on the model on the website and I know lots of people rave about it.  If you are tempted, why not give it a try, particularly as there are some very beautiful matching suspenders.  You never know - it could be the perfect style for you.

If you like Bravissimo's own brand bras then you might be interested to know that I have reviewed the Parisian Plume, Moulin Rose, Boudoir Beau and Dotty Spot bras on here too.
