Since I started wearing dresses and skirts around two years ago (yes, I really had spent the vast majority of my adult life wearing trousers as I believed that skirts did not suit/would not work for me), I have been a fan of tights. I would wear black or natural shaping tights under my maxi skirts and dresses, but as I did not wear skirts any shorter than ankle length I had never considered coloured tights before now.
However, all that changed when I was at Plus North last month. I had the opportunity to try out a few different items from the wonderful We Love Colors range, thanks to the gorgeous Toni, and I leapt at the chance. We Love Colors sell tights, fishnet items and socks for women, men and children. They have a specific section for Plus Size Hosiery which comprises tights, footless tights and fishnet pantyhose.
First up, I tried their Plus Size Tights. Available in pretty much every colour of the rainbow - 51 in total - I tried to pick colours that would complement my existing wardrobe.
Aren't these stunning colours? I love how bright and vibrant they are and they work really well with my black dress, brightening it up and adding a sense of fun. I had never considered wearing tights with my Wallis dresses before now, instead preferring my shaping leggings. However this was a revelation to me - I had no idea how nice tights could look as an alternative!
These tights are so soft and easy to wear. Having become accustomed to wearing shapewear - tights or leggings - most of the time, it felt a little odd to wear tights that did not push on my tummy or cut in at the waist...but it's a feeling I could definitely get used to! If I wanted to have the extra support I could always wear a pair of shapewear shorts, such as my new ones from Gok Wan, or regular shaping tights underneath a pair of these beauties.
I tried these tights on in a variety of sizes (C/D, E and EE) and I found they were all very generous. My hip measurement is 47" so if yours is higher than this you will definitely find tights to fit you from We Love Colors! I think my ideal size in the Plus Size Tights would be A/B (or possibly M/L in the regular sizing) but I would be concerned that these would not be long enough. I fit within the specified height range but I like my tights to have plenty of pull-up potential and so often size up in order to get this.
We Are Colors also do a range of Footless Tights available in all 51 colours.
These tights are again so soft and easy to wear. When I tried them on I actually thought they were leggings and it wasn't until I checked out the We Love Colors website that I realised they were footless tights. It makes sense as they were slightly transparent and at certain angles I could see my knickers through them! That wouldn't be a worry for me, however, as I would not wear skirts any shorter than knee-length.
My only criticism of these footless tights is that the waist is not long enough. These were a size E and they barely covered my bottom. I know I have a particularly generous backside but I would have expected better coverage considering this was one of the largest sizes available. Again, it's not an issue for me in terms of what might be 'on show' but more from a comfort point of view - I hate it when leggings and tights feel like they're not covering my bum and I have to keep checking and/or pulling them up! I guess they are more of a hipster style but this is not a rise I am keen on as it can cut into my hips and cause unsightly bulges.
The final item I tried was Fishnet Knee Highs.
These are again available in all 51 colours so it's really easy to choose a pair to match your outfit.
For me, these are not something I would buy because my knees are certainly not my best feature and I am not convinced the Knee Highs would have stayed up for much longer than the time it took to take this photo!
However, I loved how they looked - so different for me - and they felt very comfortable and soft. Fishnets are ideal on warmer days as you still get the effect of tights but they are cooler as the air can get to your skin more easily. I would love to try some of the Plus Size Nylon/Lycra Fishnets to see how they worked for me.
I am really impressed with these items from We Love Colors and their website is really comprehensive. They've even compiled this clear colour guide so you can work out which colour and shade is best for your outfit. Which colour is your favourite?
